"Mighty Orbots" (1984-85)
I watched this vintage 80’s cartoon every Saturday and then it was gone. I didn’t understand why, because it was great. I remembered excellent animation, good stories and a little android girl who had the key to activate a giant robot. After years and years of trying to remember the title, it only took 5 hours of searching through an 80’s cartoon forum to find it. This show kindled my imagination like few others. It never got the recognition it deserved.

The Naked Kiss (1964)
I saw this at the St. Louis International Film Festival this week. I must say that it is bizarre, shocking, over-the-top, but I loved every minute of it. Director and screenwriter James Gunn led a discussion of this odd Sam Fuller film which I found very interesting. Hopefully this week I will be able to catch some more films.

Jaxon came out this weekend and we pounded out more ADR. We wrapped up a number of scenes... Read more at www.ezracrane.com.
Angel and the Badman (1947)
I enjoyed this movie very much. It is a solid film from the acting to the directing to the writing, but especially the writing. John Wayne gave a great performance. Gail Russell was strikingly beautiful. One might think I’ve been studying John Wayne with some of the movies I’ve been watching. But, actually I’ve been studying James Edward Grant who was a frequent collaborator of Wayne’s. Mainly a writer Grant also directed this film. His story sense and skill with dialogue was very impressive.

The Comancheros (1961)
This is one entertaining movie. It’s slightly dated in shooting style and some would fine it slow. I however thought it was very refreshing. The action was exciting and shot very well. It was just a good old fashioned story told well. The film had an overall settling effect on me. I can’t explain it exactly right. I think it was the worldview of the film. It was steady compared to other films I’ve been recently watching.

Dirty Harry (1971)
For years I thought I had seen this, but I realized I had seen the third one and thought it was the first one. Watching this I did notice I had seen parts of it before. I must say it didn’t do much for me. Don’t get me wrong it was directed and shot better than the majority of today’s movies. But, I found it to be disturbing and unsettling more than entertaining.

Some Random Thoughts on The Road Warrior (Mad Max 2, 1982)
I’ve been obsessed with this movie for the past week (okay, it’s more like since I was 12 years old). Though, I have watched it three times this week. Here are some random thoughts:
The mythic quality of the story is what separates this movie from other PAs. It also had a fine cast and a good size budget, but these factors are overrated. The Postman, Waterworld and The Blood of Heroes have fine casts and even larger budgets yet The Road Warrior blows them away.
Though set in our future, the story takes place in the past as narrated by an elderly “feral kid.” This automatically gives the story more weight since we normally romanticize the past. Not only does this connect Max to people we met as children and idolized, but also to “the heroes and warriors of old.”
70’s cars make the best PA vehicles.
The “shot, reverse shot” shooting style adds to the personal nature of the story as well as enhances the action sequences.
Modifying normal everyday items to resemble years of wear is the way to go when making a PA film. A good rule: Never fabricate anything you could buy at a garage sale for a dollar.
Swedish weightlifters make awesome gang leaders!

The Challenge (Kampfansage – Der Ietzte Schuler, 2005)
This film is an enjoyable post-apocalyptic martial arts romp. It has too much CG for my taste, but still it’s a lot of fun.

The Terminator (1984)
Intense. Powerful. This film still packs a punch even after viewing it for about the two hundredth time. It is everything an action film should be.
Goodfellas (1990)
I’m not a fan of gangster fiction so I’ve put off seeing this for a long time. It proved to be a compelling story. But, it was not my cup of tea. I was surprised to see so many continuity errors in the film from Scorsese.

The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (Shao Lin san shi liu fang, 1978)
Thank you, Dragon Dynasty! Finally movies that deserve quality releases are getting them. And The 36th Chamber of Shaolin is one of the most deserving seeing as how it is widely regarded as the best Kung Fu film ever. I haven’t seen every Kung Fu film ever made, so I will hold off calling it that. It is certainly is a fine film, though. It opens somewhat slowly. The ancient Chinese politics make it a bit hard to follow at first, but then it gets going. The film mainly concerns itself with the training of our hero. And what incredible training it is. The whole sequence, which eats up most of the film’s running time, is truly excellent. I actually found myself wishing it was longer. Forget the plot give me more of that training. Had I seen it as a kid I would have taken up martial arts for sure.

Death Wish (1974)
For being more than 30 years old this film still shocks with its violence, especially the plot catalyst scene. This film has sparked much discussion over the years. Some love it, many hate it. Writing Guru Robert McKee even equates it with a Nazi worldview. This is, of course, ridiculous. The theme of this film is stated plainly, “a person has the right to defend himself.” That said the morality does become confused. The main character puts himself in situations that require him to defend himself and finishes off his attackers after they are no longer a threat. But, still the theme is one of self-defense and not of world domination and the wanton slaughter of innocents as Mr. McKee would have us believe. The film also plays on the theme of government’s inability to defend its own people. One thing I found interesting was the idea that the city dwellers were too civilized to defend themselves. Also, their disconnection with the land and how it creates a false view of the world is very powerful. If you like this movie fine. If not that’s fine as well. Just don’t write it off. It is a complex character-driven film that deserves more than that.
Hondo (1953)
This is a very entertaining John Wayne western. Expect Indian attacks, foolish soldiers, and a widow with a young son and some great lines by Wayne.
From Here to Eternity (1953)
This is not your typical WWII movie. This film is a well-crafted drama that enjoys status as one of the greatest movies of all time. I’m not sure I would agree with that, but it is brilliant in many ways.

Mean Streets (1973)
I had a bad experience watching selected scenes in a film class years ago. So I wasn’t really looking forward to watching this, but I was pleasantly surprised. Viewing it as it was intended revealed a well crafted, intelligent and highly personal film.
Persona (1966)
I’m not a fan of deconstructionism, yet I found this film to be gripping. World famous for good reason and certainly bizarre it shouldn’t be missed. Though, many will struggle with it.

They Live (1987)
Okay, this movie is crazy. It’s a fun horror/sci-fi/action movie with likable characters and actors. Roddy Piper and Keith David make a great team. The end let me down, but the open and the set up of the main conflict was awesome.
Easy Rider (1969)
This movie is something like the mission statement of the counter-culture movement. I found it to be enjoyable, yet disturbing. The theme of “do your own thing on your own time” is powerful and compelling, but it is tainted. It is tainted by the dishonest portrayal of drug use. The idea of a simpler communion with the land and people is again undermined by the self-destructiveness of drug use. I must admit that how money and the city proved to be the main characters undoing was finely executed.

I forgot to post this yesterday. We did a lot of work this past weekend including a site redesign. Check it out: www.ezracrane.com.
The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T. (1953)
This is a bizarre, fantasy musical co-written by Dr. Seuss that features Siamese twins connected at the beard. I had a hard time getting into it mostly because I’m not a fan of musicals. It was very clever, though. Dr. Seuss showed off his considerable rhyming skills with the songs lyrics. The set designs and costumes were unique and imaginative. I’m sure fans of musicals would enjoy it very much. I found it to be a little too slow.

Donovan’s Brain (1953)
I’ve wanted to see this for a long time. It didn’t disappoint me until the end and then only a little. The story developed well, but at the end it felt like the filmmakers were trying to wrap it up quickly. The shower of sparks, lightning strike, flaming climax should be enjoyed by all fans of 50’s sci-fi, though.

Bullitt (1968)
Steve McQueen is cool and so is the car chase, but overall I wasn’t too engaged by this film. The acting and cinematography are good, but other than that there’s not much here. Though it maybe a personal bias, because I’m not a fan of cop dramas and crime stories.

A Man for All Seasons (1966)
What is the cost of living an honest life devoted to God? What will men sacrifice for power and position? Find out is this intelligent and moving masterwork from Fred Zinneman. Beautifully filmed, well crafted and expertly written this film work on themes that touch the very soul. Be warned. It requires work. The viewer must listen to every line and consider them carefully. But, the experience is well worth the effort.
Runaway (1984)
This film is usually credited as ending Michael Crichton’s directing career, but it’s not all that bad. Sure, it has the standard action movie clichés, poor acting and the ending credits sequence is one of the corniest things I’ve ever seen. Yet, the concept is strong and imaginative. What really kills this film, though, is the pacing. It feels slow and dated especially when compared to The Terminator which was released the same year.
Sansho the Bailiff (Sansho dayu, 1954)
This is an incredible film of beauty and sorrow. The acting, writing, cinematography and direction are all excellent. It is truly a treasure of Japanese cinema.

The School of Rock (2003)
This turned out to be a well made film with great music. Though, I must admit I didn’t care for it much. The messages of the film were confused and generic. The standard “believe in yourself” theme was corrupted by the blatant “ends justify the means” attitude. Also, the stated theme of “stick it to the man” wasn’t developed as anything other than a vague “live your dream” idea. Parts were enjoyable, but the whole lacked focus.

Rocketship X-M (1950)
Lloyd Bridges stars in this classic space adventure. Astronauts heading to the Moon take an unintended detour to Mars. The film turns a noticeable corner once they reach the red planet. It drops the attempted realism of a “space procedural” and becomes a compelling parable about nuclear war. The special effects seem a bit weak even for 1950, though the ruined city on Mars is quite good. The film plays somewhat slowly to modern eyes in parts. Yet, it is only 77 minutes long so viewing is not tedious. In fact the whole Martian storyline makes up for slowness at the beginning.

Justin and I hammered out sound on several more scenes this weekend. We worked on some ADR that Alysha recorded… Read more at www.ezracrane.com.
The Grand Illusion (1937)
Jean Renoir’s tale of WWI fighter pilot is widely regarded as a masterpiece. I found it to be quite good. World War I has always interested me and this film paints a unique portrait of that era. What impressed me most about the movie was its spirit. It is an engaging story of human relationships that fosters dignity and hope. Yet, it doesn’t whitewash suffering or make the characters overly emotional. Simply put this is a very fine film.
The Fury (1978)
Okay, my online DVD rental provider sent me the wrong movie. I was supposed to get Fury (1936) Fritz Lang’s first American film, but I got a Brian De Palma film instead. It stars Kirk Douglas so I had to watch it. It was too long, a bit cheesy and involves psychic powers. De Palma always does manage to create some cool images, though.

Alexander Nevsky (1938)
This film is a Russian propaganda piece, but it was made by a genius. Sure, it feels a bit stiff and slow compared to today’s films. But, the story structure blows modern films away. It is simple and satisfying without strained spectacle. The influence of the shooting style can be seen still today with the start wide then cut in formula. The cut ins are very smooth for the time period revealing a skillful and practiced hand and eye. It proved to be an interesting viewing experience.

Haiti Journal July 2007
Since, I got such a good response from my journal in January I though I would post the entries from this trip as well. As always I do edit the entries. I don’t publish some of my more personal thoughts and I try to respect the privacy of other individuals. I correct some of the grammar, but not all because I write in a loose style. I do try to be honest. I leave in my struggles, my questions to God and my inarticulate ramblings. Enjoy:

I’m on a plane going to Miami. The takeoff was bumpy. But, the sky is beautiful. Clouds spring up like towers. Rivers cut the land like muddy ribbons. Square and rectangle farms spread to the limit of vision. Now, clouds form mountain ranges with jagged peaks. (My throat is sore. Please Lord, heal me.) More rivers this time blue. I’m tired. I’m nervous. I’m thinking about my two year commitment of moving to Haiti. Do I have the will to set my heart on this? No. I don’t, but Lord you are awesome. I should do this. I know in my heart. I should do this. I will miss my parents, my brother, his wife, Robby and Andy, Valley Park Chapel and the Impact kids. But, what will I gain? Twenty-five daughters! A chance to depend on the Lord for all I need. On this trip, Lord, I want to honor you. Lord, please guide me. Please keep me in your presence. Lord, be mighty. Work in this broken man. Take me where you want me to be.
Later – Sitting in the Miami airport watching the lightning. It’s spotty. I can’t tell which way it’s moving. The fire alarm strobes were going off on the level above of us. I had visions of a mass evacuation. But, it didn’t happen. When flying in I saw some amazing circle farms that looked like works of art. We flew right over Tampa. I could see the Skyway Bridge, the bay, the city, the gulf, and the Moon all at once! Out the terminal windows the sky has grown angrier. The lightning is crazy. Now, I really hope the fire alarm doesn’t go off. Why am I here? Do I mean, why am I in the airport going to Haiti? Or do I mean, why am I here on Earth? I don’t know why I just felt like asking that question. Lord, why am I here? I want to serve you. I want to live a life pleasing to you. Please, O Lord, be my courage and my heart for I feel weak. Lord, give me firmness of will. I love you, Lord. I will praise your Name.
Later – We got held in Miami overnight, weather and plane problems. The airline put us up in a hotel. I have a big room to myself. Well, I need to sleep.
7-6-07
Flying to Haiti. I just saw a rainbow in the clouds. (Oh, yesterday I saw a bull’s-eye rainbow.) As we travel, Lord, I ask that you give us mercy. Help me to love those little girls at the house. Help me give of myself. Help me. The clouds! They look like towns and castles! I enjoy seeing all the people on the plane and at the airport. A million stories, souls, broken hearts, loves, sorrows, joys... Lord, bless them all. Lord, give me the heart to serve.
Later – We’ve been here at the house all day. I’ve been playing with the girls a lot. I taped plastic over the windows of the van because the starter burned up. It’s a long story. We saw a building burning down. It was crazy. I’m sitting on the roof. I want to pray. O Lord, help me. Give me courage. Give me courage! I need the will to act, the will to be a man, the will to be your man, O Lord. Please, allow something to come of this trip. Give me the will to stick with what I decide. O Lord, be my king. Take my life. Please, O Lord, show me your power. I will praise you.

Back home today they had the Impact 30th reunion (the youth group where I’m a leader). Well, today I swam in the Caribbean Sea. Ha! I would have enjoyed seeing some people from the past, but I felt I should come to Haiti. We did go to the beach and it was a lot of fun. There was this married Brazilian/Portuguese guy that was hitting on the girls. It made me upset. Actually “upset” is the wrong word. It made me sick. I hate guys like that. I hate the ease at which they can talk to girls. I hate how they treat their wives and the girls they hit on. But, enough of that. Driving to and from the beach I saw some sights I wish I had been able to get pictures of. Two, extraordinarily muscular, grey beards cutting palm fronds (They should have been warriors not farmers.). A little bitty girl riding a donkey while whacking him with a stick. A speckled goat munching freshly cut funeral flowers. At the house Fena hit a ball over the wall, so Vanessa and I went to get it. I had to jump around on a pile of rocks with the girls yelling down to me. It was fun. Tomorrow, I may speak at the youth meeting. O Lord, I trust in you.
7-8-07
I’m sitting on the roof. It just rained on me fortunately it was just a sprinkle. It was cool. The sky is crazy. Beautiful, I mean. Today was church. It was good. It was hot and long, but I enjoyed it. I spoke at the youth meeting tonight. It was an experience. I was nervous. I gave my testimony and just shared a few verses. It was fun. (It started raining harder so I came inside.) I hope I was able to share with them well. It is in your hands, O Lord. Lord, guide me in all things. I praise you and I will tell of your works to all who will listen. Lord, I am yours and I long to serve you. I praise your Name!
7-9-07
Where do I begin? Today I went to VBS (Vacation Bible School). We had about 70 kids or so. I played football and baseball with the kids. Well, we just threw around the football and I tried to show them how to bat. I talked a lot with some of the older teens. They were teaching me Creole. I’d point to something and they’d say the Creole word. I’d try to pronounce it and they would all laugh. Then I came back to the house. I talked with Vanessa a long time, which was cool. We talked about the doc Ghosts of Cite Soleil. She has seen it and I have only read about it. Then I went with Carole to the auto parts store. Sounds simple, but it’s not. We passed this place where they slaughter goats (for voodoo I think) and leave the carcasses lying around. The garage owner beat his employee after he shot sparks on me. I’m white so that means I’m rich and I represent business. In that part of town there is a huge slum. Words, words, words! I need words to describe it. Squalor. Rank. Horrifying. A mound of trash that is home to hundreds if not thousands. A river of human waste. It is not poverty that makes you sad. It’s poverty that scares you. I think I’m in shock. It is night and I see the lights of the wealthy up on the hill. I condemn them for their indifference. Yet I sit up on my hill called American and cast only a backward glance at the all need. And for some reason I think that is enough. O Lord, change me! Give me a heart of flesh not stone. Let me be a man after your own heart. Teach me to love with deeds and not only words. Teach me, O Lord! Teach me! Lord, be my all in all. Be my King. Be my Lord. Be my all. Change me, please. O Lord, open my heart. Break it to reshape it in your image. Break me to fix me. Make me a new man. And may that new man be a servant useful to you.
7-10-07
Today was interesting. I stayed at the house. I worked on fixing the toilet. It wasn’t fun, but it was necessary. I watched some of the classes that the others did with girls. I love these little orphans. I played with them a lot. I played their rock game which is kind of like Jacks. I did some goofy things like standing on my hands and stuff. O Lord, please help me. I long to serve you, O Lord. I know my thoughts are torn between you and this world. Purify my heart. Give me a heart to serve. O Lord, please break my heart only to mend it the way you want it. O Lord, I am yours. Use me!
7-11-07
Okay, so today I fixed the toilet with the guard and Evers. Yesterday, I didn’t get the job done. But, today we tore the whole thing apart. Tonight we had a birthday party for the girls. It was fun. Then we found a rat in Carole’s bathroom. One of the guys trapped it in the trashcan. Nobody wanted to kill it. So I took it to the roof and killed it with the machete. I threw it over the side into the rock pile. I don’t want to leave! I want to stay. It sounds funny after working on a toilet and dealing with rats. But, I want to stay. (Lightning is playing all across the Western sky.) You, O Lord, are mighty! You are my King! I don’t want to leave. I want to stay and serve you. I want to stay!
7-12-07
Well, I’m sitting in the Miami airport. The flight out of Haiti was four hours late. Then the ramp was broken when we got here. I missed my connecting flight. So... I’m flying to Orlando tonight and on to St. Louis in the morning. The airline claims it will give me a hotel. They wouldn’t give me meal vouchers, so I grabbed a piece of pizza. I’m glad I did because the place closed right after I walked in. Also, I hadn’t eaten anything since leaving the house except the French cheese crackers on the plane. Leaving the house-- the flight to Orlando is late! –-was very hard. I want to play with the girls everyday. This morning I saw Hosanna still lying in bed. I went in and sang with her. “Amazing Grace” is awesome in Creole just as it is in English (and probably every other language). She is so sweet. It was a very touching moment for me. Lovia was very standoffish. It made me sad. I gave out candy as I left. They all came over and gave me hugs. They all looked very sad that I was leaving. I guess I probably did too. Lord, keep those little girls in your hand. Protect all the workers who are still there. Give them strength. Allow them to be changed, O Lord.
7-13-07
2am EST – I’m in the terminal of the Orlando airport. It’s only me and the cleaning guy. I’m tired. I’m sick. I stink. (A very attractive portrait of myself I know but what am I to do?) No hotel for me and I have about three hours until I can get some food. So you all get treated to the sleep deprived ramblings of a half-crazed airport dweller. Still thinking of Haiti. But, I must admit already the cares and concerns of this world come crushing in. Work, Ezra Crane, money... All cloud my vision. Not to mention concerns for the future. O Lord, all is in your hands. Grant me peace. Grant me a little sleep. To be able to love those little girls in Haiti I will sleep in an airport, go hungry for awhile and much, much more.
Later – Well, I got a couple hours of sleep. The floor of the airport is not all that comfortable, but I won’t complain. I woke up about 4 am and ate at Burger King. I took my Malaria med and had a bottle of really good chocolate milk. Now, I’m waiting. Lord, I thank you for your provision.
If you’re still with me I have some follow ups. When I got home I found out that Ghosts of Cite Soleil was playing at a local University. I went and saw it on the 14th. Read about my response in another post. A few things keep coming back to my mind about Haiti. I remember Fena asking me to stay one day. It made me want to stay very badly. Another day Baby was scared by the cat and ran to me for protection. It was a good feeling. A good trip all around and I can’t wait to go back again.

Ghosts of Cite Soleil (2006)
I noticed this film was showing at a local university the day after I returned from Haiti. It offers a bleak portrait of Haiti’s worst slum by following two gang leaders during the chaos of 2004. The documentary tries hard to make you feel sorry for these gang leaders, which is impossible. Don’t get me wrong my heart breaks for all the innocent people of Cite Soleil, but these men were murderers (both are dead now). You can say their environment made them into what they were, but people always have a choice. I have friends who have come from similar environments and they have made better choices. Okay, back to the film. It is brutal, but I feel honest in most ways. I must admit I didn’t care for the style in which it was shot, but the content outweighs it. All in all a very good look at a confusing time in Haiti’s history.

The Noah (1975)
The last man on earth slowly loses his mind. This is a thought-provoking and well-made film. It is also very depressing. The camera angles are skillfully composed. The acting is very good. It contains lots of Biblical references and statements on war and nuclear weapons. The end drags a bit and it seems longer than it is.

Impact Reunion
I thought I would share this. I wrote it to be read at 30th reunion of Impact (the youth group where I am a leader) since I’ll be in Haiti. Enjoy:
“On a Tuesday night, 20 years ago, I stumbled into a small chapel building. I was 13 years old. And I was lost. I had no hope. I had no future. After silly games and songs a man shared a story about how God loved us so much he sent his son to die for us.
I wasn’t impressed. I had heard it all before and it didn’t mean anything to me. If God loved me so much then where was he? Where was he when I was in pain? Where was he when my heart was broken? Where was he when my Grandpa died? Where was he when...? Where was he when...?
I didn’t need to hear anymore stories. I knew what God was like. He was an evil sadist who created people in a world that batters and breaks them, all the while laughing at their pain. Yet, I kept coming back on Tuesday nights.
One of those nights I sat quietly hearing the same story again, but this time it was different. I knew it was true. I knew that God loved me. I knew I had been running from God. I knew God had provided a cure for this miserable world, the blood of his own son. I knew I had to make a choice: accept Christ or reject him.
Needless to say, I put my trust in him that night. The next morning, the world hadn’t changed. I was still in a bad situation at school. I still had scars and heartache. But, I had hope. I had a future. Just like it says in Jeremiah: “For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jer 29:11, NIV)
Impact to me means life. I don’t go to Impact to have fun. I don’t go to play sports. I go so that either through my faltering words or imperfect deeds I may share Christ. And maybe share him with a lost teenager not too unlike one, who stumbled into the same chapel building 20 years ago.”

Ezra Crane Update
Alysha came out to the studio on Saturday. We recorded ADR on several more of her scenes. She is very close to being done with her ADR. She only has two more scenes and... Read more at www.ezracrane.com.
Supergirl (1984)
Yes, I watched Supergirl. I’ve been meaning to watch it since I was 10. Well, I finally got around to it. I should have watched it then because it would have played better I’m sure. All in all though it wasn’t that bad and there were some enjoyable parts. The use of coincidence to set up the whole plot put me off, but kids probably won’t even notice. How the effects could look so dated compared with other films of the time is really surprising.
Three Texas Steers (1939)
I’m certainly glad John Wayne was granted time off during the shooing of this movie to film Stagecoach (1939). Stagecoach, of course, made him a star. I’m not sure what this film made him, though. This was a B movie so entertainment was the only consideration. It has some western action, humor, circus folk, a little romance and a man in a gorilla suit. And who could forget that small tracked vehicle that pulls a prairie schooner. As far as the plot goes there are about eight of them none of which get resolved. This was one of a strange breed of Westerns that blended the Old West with modern (at the time) technology. It wasn’t just this film. A few years back I saw a Roy Rogers picture that did the same thing. It led to a line that has stuck with me. Roy Rogers, sheriff of an 1880’s-like town proclaims, “We have to save the airline!”
The Sea Hawk (1940)
The Sea Hawk is a classic pirate movie. It begins with an impressive ship battle and ends with a cool sword fight. I would have preferred to begin with the sword fight and end with the ship battle, but it’s Errol Flynn and it’s Michael Curtiz. I do believe I like Captain Blood (1935) better, though.

Ghostrider (2007)
Based on critics and the fact that very few people saw this film I thought it was going to be bad. But, I was pleasantly surprised. Sure there are a few silly parts, but on the whole Ghostrider is a good movie. It had a nice Western feel which is a perfect fit for the character. It is a lot of action and the score and soundtrack are great. The biggest problem is that nobody seems to know how powerful demons should fight. But, it still was a lot of fun.
Knightriders (1981)
A very unique and interesting concept for a film, but Knightriders could have been so much more. The story revolves around renaissance fair that jousts with motorcycles and a leader (well played by Ed Harris) who believes he’s fighting the dragon. The visuals are excellent, there are some great stunts and the score is perfect and beautiful. Unfortunately, it is way too long and the acting of the supporting cast is poor.
Burst City (1982)
Okay, I enjoy Japanese cinema and I’m a fan of cyberpunk cinema, but not in this case. I found this film to be nearly unwatchable. Usually films in this vein are dense, incoherent and rely solely on visuals to create an interesting experience. Burst City is certainly the first two, but it lacks the visuals and becomes a jumble of scenes that hint at a story but never deliver. Some good Japanese punk music and huge mob scenes are about all it boasts.
Godzilla (1956)
After recently viewing the Japanese version I was surprised at how good this version still plays. The re-cut was handled with great ingenuity. Raymond Burr is perfectly cast and his excellent voice carries a number of the scenes. I must admit I chuckle a bit every time some one cries out, “Steve, Steve Martin!”

Gojira (1954)
I finally got to see the original Japanese cut of Godzilla. I found it to be very good if a bit slow. The story really comes across and makes interesting points about man’s ability to destroy himself. The special features really give insight into the creation of the monster suit and how the story was developed. I was never a huge fan of the series growing up though The Terror of Mechagodzilla is a great movie and personal favorite. It’s about time we got the original.
Hang’em High (1968)
Hang’em High is great western story, but the filming style is very dated. It seems older than the Leone ones, yet they are older. Still it has a great cast and is entertaining. Talk about a story that deserves a remake.

Westworld (1973)
I have been hearing this was good for years and it is. Nothing extraordinary, though. It is very entertaining and sports an interesting premise. What stuck me most is how filmic storytelling has changed so 34 years. Westworld is dense and has numerous characters. It keeps the viewer involved and thinking about the story all the way through. It felt longer than its 88 minutes, but this (for once) was a good feeling. Filmic storytelling these days is pared down, yet running times leave 2 hour mark far behind. Storytelling has been cast aside for visual jokes and spectacle. Don’t get me wrong I’m for clever visuals and spectacle, but I want a story too.
Delicatessen (1991)
A post-apocalyptic, black comedy that is quite bizarre and engaging. Not for the faint of heart.
Things to Come (1936)
A stunning film with great special effects Things to Come is a bit dated and slow. It is a wonderful piece of cinema history. Unfortunately, it is a propaganda vehicle for insipid scientism.

Highlander: The Search for Vengeance (2007)
An anime by famed director Yoshiaki Kawajiri based on Highlander? Yeah, I had to rent this soon as it came out. There’s some crazy sword action, some crazy mutant action, some crazy WWII action, some crazy robot action, some crazy Roman action, some crazy mullet action and even some crazy giant alligator action. The animation was good with some great post-apocalyptic images. Not a straight PA though so that was upsetting. It’s certainly the best Highlander film since the original, but it was a bit clichéd, slow and graphic for my tastes. And why on earth would you borrow a story device from Highlander 3?
2019: After the Fall of New York (1983)
Another PA film saw as a kid. This one comes out of Italy by way of “imitation cinema.” Plot holes and poor blocking kill the inventiveness of the setting and the camera work. Only see it if you think Escape from New York was a high-point of world cinema.
Cherry 2000 (1987)
A goofy post-apocalyptic film that I saw when I was a kid (what PA film didn’t I see when I was a kid?). After a clunky open it actually turned into a fairly good movie. Ben Johnson, simply by his presence, carried every scene he was in and created some nice dramatic tension here and there. Most everything else was way over-the-top. The Mustang was nice, though. Only see it if you have three different versions of Mad Max on your shelf.

Well I'll be...
There is a Voltron live-action movie in the works: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0472429/. Still not sure if I'm wild about the live-action part.
I feel like a kid again...
All the cartoons I watched as a kid seem to be coming back as live-action tentpoles: Transformers, Speed racer, He-Man and now Thundercats http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?category=3&id=41795.
All I need now is Voltron and I'm set. Though, I must admit I'm not to wild about the live-actin part.

I just heard about this movie. I always thought Highlander should do a Post-Apocalyptic storyline. It comes out tomorrow on DVD.

The End of August at the Hotel Ozone (Konec srpna v Hotelu Ozon, 1967)
This film came out of the Czech New Wave. It tells a depressing story of survival by a band of women after a nuclear war. The narrative is sparse and simple as is the cinematography. This film captures the mindset of the survivors who know only a destroyed and desperate world. The lack of forethought and the “live for today” attitude creates a world more terrifying than one populated with nuclear bombs.

Stargate SG-1 “Children Of The Gods” (pilot, 1997)
I had only seen bits and pieces of a few SG-1 episodes even though it’s been on the air for 10 years. I found them to be interesting, but I never had the desire or the time to get into the show. A friend, who’s a fan, lent me the DVD of the pilot almost a year ago and I just finally got around to watching it. (Mainly because I’m having issues with my DVD rent by mail service; the last three have been damaged.) I really don’t know why I was so reluctant to watch it, because I found it to be very good. Maybe it had something to do with me being sorely disappointed with the original film. But, fortunately the creators of the TV series worked with the cool parts of the concept unlike the filmmakers. The pilot was a good set up for a series. It provided a good recap and established a good launching point. It was entertaining and developed interesting characters. The main problem was the introduction of the Teal’c character it seemed rushed and a bit unbelievable. Overall the pilot was excellent, though.

The Quest Continues…
My never-ending quest to watch as many movies as possible hit a snag this weekend. I don’t really want to mention the title of the movie. I know some of the people who worked on it and there was nothing good to say about it so… I’ll leave it at that. Hopefully, this week of movie viewing will be better.

I know it's not cool to admit...
but I love He-man! Or at least I did when I was a kid. And yes I enjoyed (and still enjoy) the 1987 live-action movie. Now, we may get a new one:

No Star Wars TV Movies?
Lucas just said there would be TV movies a few weeks ago (see May 9th entry). I guess he misspoke: http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?category=3&id=41624. Don’t get me wrong I’m happy there won’t be any it’s just I’m confused.

Interesting...
An interesting post over at Looking Closer: http://lookingcloser.wordpress.com/2007/05/22/tolkien-would-not-be-pleased/
The Fountain (2006)
I don’t understand at all why critics didn’t like The Fountain. It’s non-chronological, dense and confusing. That should be enough to send critics into rants of undeserved praise. But it was also imaginative, different and well made. And of course that’s enough for it to be condemned as pretentious and laughable. I found the film to be an intriguing and multi-layered purely cinematic experience that challenged me to think and consider. Of course, I’m not surprised the film didn’t find an audience as one of the legendary Shaw Brothers’ directors said, “People go to the movies to feel, not think.” Yet, I still don’t understand why critics didn’t like it. They always want to think and be challenged by films. Oh, well. The special effects were spectacular by the way. They used a macro-photography technique that was simply stunning. I was confused by the filmmakers calling the story science fiction, though. It’s clearly a fantasy they just dressed it up with some science here and there. My guess as to why is because fantasy is viewed as being childish where as science fiction is considered adult and intellectually sound. Of course, in reality the reverse is true but I digress… In all The Fountain should not be missed.

Destination Moon (1950)
The George Pal produced Destination Moon is a surprisingly realistic journey to the Moon. The acting is stilted and the director failed to create any believable danger or conflict. Yet, the special effects are handled with the imagination and ingenuity that defines Pal’s work. They are truly impressive for 1950. Like I said it is very realistic. Unfortunately, I’m not a fan of realism. This film lacks the fun and the wonder of Pal’s fantasy films.
The Godfather Part II (1974)
Even after numerous film classes I had never seen the whole thing. I don’t care for gangster pictures, but The Godfather Part II was very good. It certainly wasn’t as good as the first one, though. The acting and the writing continued to be topnotch. But the most impressive aspect, by far, of both films is the editing. I learned a lot just watching the cutting style.

Secondhand Lions (2003)
Secondhand Lions is an off-beat, low-key celebration of life and honesty. The plot is weak and some of the action is unbelievable, but it’s all fun and a bit bittersweet. I wish there had been a more noticeable change in the Walter character. It is there to be sure, but a little more would have been nice. The theme of unbelievable tales being true and plausible ones being lies was very poignant. The most enjoyable part of the film is just watching wonderful characters interact.

Android Apocalypse (2006)
Terminator meets The Defiant Ones as a human convict and an android try to find freedom in a bleak future. Unfortunately the drama is flat, the action is poor and the story is choppy. That said I found Android apocalypse to be entertaining if only slightly so. Some interesting ideas and a lot of wasted opportunities like many other genre pictures.

The Hidden Blade (Kakushi ken oni no tsume, 2004)
The Hidden Blade is a tenderly crafted tale of tremendous beauty as well as a window into Japanese culture. Once again Yoji Yamada asserts himself as a master filmmaker. I think I enjoyed this more than any other movie I’ve watched in awhile.

To End All Wars (2001)
A slow, exposition heavy beginning gives way to a compelling and gripping story in To End All Wars. I’m glad I didn’t give up on this film, which is based on true events concerning British POWs during WWII. I was put off, at first, by distracting handheld camerawork and overt sentimentalism. Yet, after the film got going it came to a powerful emotional climax. To End All Wars is an inspiring story of human dignity in the face of incredible suffering. If you hang with it through the first 25 minutes or so you won’t be disappointed.

Time of the Wolf (Le Temps du Loup, 2003)
Since I’m a huge fan of apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic film and literature I’ve wanted to see Time of the Wolf for a while. By director Michael Haneke’s own admission the story was designed to give safe and comfortable people a taste of the end of the world. He accomplished his goal with a stark and unsettling film of harrowing beauty. The film has a minimal plot and leaves the work of figuring out what is happening to the audience. The acting is very well done, but where the film achieves power is in the direction of the camera. The lens lingers and records whole scenes from one dramatic angle. I wouldn’t say I “enjoyed” watching the film, but I was captivated by it.

Journal
I thought I would share another journal entry involving my decision to move to Haiti. Yes, I know my grammar is horrible.
2-13-07
I watched My Neighbor Totoro last night. It was very good. The movie made me feel good, but it pointed out my emptiness. I have nothing in this world. I’m a wanderer looking for some bygone days that were never as good as I remember. I haven’t lived. I’ve holed up in a fantasy world and wrapped it neatly in my own laziness. I’ve read the Bible a thousand times. I cry out for blessings, yet have I ever blessed anyone? Sure, I’ve taught Sunday school and Bible study. But, have I fed the hungry? The Bible says to do it. Have I done it? Oh, I’ve given money, but have I fed the hungry? Have I loved the unloved? Or have I agreed with what the Bible says and patted myself on my back for my concern. All the while allowing my brother to suffer need? When will I stop saying I don’t have a life and act? Right now! Lord, I commit my plans to you. I intend to move to Haiti in ’09. Lord, I need your help every step of the way. Thank you, O Lord… The trip to Haiti fades from my mind. Each day I forget a little of the burning that filled my heart as I stared at the sea, as I looked off the roof, as I played with the orphans. I felt I could do good there. If the Lord wills I feel I could serve there. By losing myself I know I will find myself. O Lord, I pray to you. You are awesome and holy. I give you all I have. Do what you will. I will always praise you.

Kagemusha (The Shadow Warrior, 1980)
Why did I wait so long to watch this film? Kagemusha is one of Kurosawa’s more dense films, but it’s worth the effort. Every shot is composed with a painter’s eye. Color is splashed across screen with a vigorous hand. He was never afraid to move his camera or keep it still (which takes much more courage by the way). But no matter how he handled the camera it always served the story. In Kagemusha he combines Noh drama with the Western narrative tradition in a way only a genius could. Even at three hours with an intricate story and multiple characters I could not help but want more.

Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone (1983)
The early 80’s saw many Star Wars and Mad Max rip-offs, but Spacehunter managed to rip-off both at the same time. I remember Spacehunter coming on after Saturday morning cartoons when I was a kid. Watching it led to hours of running around outside playing “space freighter captain” and “space bounty hunter.” Once it got dark I remember drawing pictures, fleshing out the universe with stories and wishing I had an outfit and gun like Wolff’s (Peter Strauss). Viewing it now with a critical eye the film is not bad and remains one of the best films of its kind. The plot, unfortunately, is pure exploitation, yet it doesn’t stray beyond its PG rating. A “unique” opening credit sequence, over-the-top heroic music and poor ship design and matte work detract from the viewing experience. The film sports a good cast, though. But, where it really shines is the vehicle designs and post-apocalyptic imagery. A sail powered train car is brilliant and I still curse myself for not thinking of it first. Also, the makers of Star Trek: First Contact, years later with a much larger special effects budget, seemingly stole the villainous and imaginative Overdog (Michael Ironside) turning him into the Borg Queen. Most would call Spacehunter “trash” or at least a waste of time. Yet, its creativity and fun-loving spirit appeals to me greatly.

Ladri di biciclette (The Bicycle Thief, 1948)
I found The Bicycle Thief to be a compelling and honest portrayal of poverty. Also, I found the acting to be very true. That said I didn’t enjoy it all that much. All neo-realism leaves me with an empty feeling. I’m completely aware that the real world is brutal, but hope is no less real.

Vanishing Point (1971)
As a child getting to stay up late and watch Vanishing Point on TV was a big event. I remember my brother and my cousins nearly worshiping this major cult film from the 70’s. My own memories consist of little more than shadowy images of cars and an explosion. Watching it again as an adult I was struck by the sheer beauty of John Alonzo’s cinematography. The stark, lonely beauty of the American West adds to the film by becoming almost another character. I was also impressed with Richard C. Sarafian’s skillful handling of the minimalistic story. The film is marred somewhat by the 70's drug and sex culture. Yet, the good man who has been tainted by the very corruption he hates and is striving for another level of existence speaks powerfully.

Haiti Journal - Jan 07
With my decision to move to Haiti I thought I would be interesting to post my journal entries from my first Haiti trip. I’m trying not to forget how I felt when I was there. It’s funny how quickly the things of this life cloud my vision and deaden my heart to the need in this world. I have slightly edited the entries for clarity and withheld some more personal comments. I apologize for my horrible grammar and random thought process.

I’m sitting on the roof of the orphanage in Haiti. It’s pitch black. I’m using a flashlight to write. Haiti hits you like a ton of bricks. The poverty is staggering. From the air it’s a mountainous wilderness. Port-au-Prince sits in a bowl or amphitheater. Skeletons of houses stretch for miles. Sail boats dotted the sun bronzed sea. The airport is under UN control. Brazilian troops man posts with machine guns. The city is a huge slum. The streets are lined with people who have nothing. Everything is in decay. Nothing seems new. All appears hopeless. The rich sit up on the mountain their lights only make the poor seem poorer. I’m ill at ease. I’m ashamed of myself. The girls swarmed us desiring love. O Lord help me love. Teach me your kindness. Show me your heart. Teach me to love like you do.

I’ve only been here about 24 hours and I already love one of the girls. Her name is Lovia. I would raise her as my daughter. She deserves a father and a mother so do they all. Today we did a number of things. I got up with the sun. I read some of Isaiah. I shot some video. We cleared some land. I learned how to use a machete. We went to Deli Mart. Four men with shotguns stand outside for security. UN vehicles all over. Then we played with the girls. The sunrise and the sunset were beautiful. Lord, come to these people. Heal this land. Heal them! Be strong! Be merciful! Lord, come in a mighty way. Be salvation to Haiti.

Today was good. Up early. We restacked broken desks. We cleaned out the shed. Then we went up to Petionville. It was incredible. The people, the culture, the market. I loved it. I bought a few statues. One is a warrior with a sword blowing a couch shell. I will put it next to my crocodile from PNG. I cannot control my thoughts for 10 minutes! Why can’t I forget myself and love others? Lord, open my eyes to your will. Lord, be kind. Lord, be mighty. Lord, show me how to serve. Lord, guide me in the day and protect me in the night.

Today was church. It was moving yet I didn’t understand a word. I was thinking about culture and people. It is amazing how different we are yet how similar we are. The church is a wooden lean-to with a tin roof. But the church is in the hearts of the people not some building. I spent two or more hours playing with the girls. I love them all. Am I going to be changed by this trip? Or will I stay the same? Will I harden my heart to all the need in this world? Lord, change me! Even if I don’t want to! Change me! Allow me to concentrate on you. Lord, change me!

We went to the beach today. It was incredible. The water was beautiful. I found some rocks and shells. I stared at the sea for hours. Such beauty, such poverty! We drove through areas that looked like war zones. Well, some of them are war zones I guess. How do I describe the poverty? How to I tell of what I’ve seen? Lord, give me words. Give me insight. Lord, be my guide. Lord, help me. Lord, teach me what I need to know. Show me. Teach me how to love. Lord, change me. Show me how to change. Change me. Help me to live, O Lord. Change me! Lord, I need to change! Change me! I praise you, my Creator!

Today we went to Tony’s. He’s a crazy monk that helps handicapped and dying children. I can’t describe the children at his place. He asked for a volunteer to help him change a bandage on a little baby who’s covered in sores. I must admit that I was afraid so I didn’t volunteer. I didn’t think about the Lord or about helping a sick child. I thought about not getting germs. Why I am I so selfish? I don’t ever think about the Lord during the day. I think about myself, sex, food or fantasies. Lord, change me! Wake me up to the way you would have me be. Be my Father. Be my heart. Lord, be real. Show me how to be real. Give me the words and the heart to share what you’ve done for me. Help me share my life.

Our last full day. We’ve worked outside. I fixed the swing set. The day isn’t half over and I’m super tired. Lunch isn’t going to be served for hours. I’m going to play with the girls tonight. I’m going to give up my time. Lord, keep me calm and loving. Lord, teach me how to love these kids. Lord, give me strength and wisdom.

We just took of from Ft. Lauderdale. It was spectacular! The lights of the city were incredible. There were huge ships on the ocean. It was amazing. I didn’t want to leave this morning. Lovia was sad. She came up early this morning and we sat together for awhile. She went to school but she skipped out later and came back up. She cried. I cried. We talked and played a little while. Then she got busted and had to go back to school. The last I saw her was as she ran around the corner and disappeared. Then we left. I’m fighting back tears right now. I didn’t want to leave. I could have stayed. I knew this would happen. I knew before I ever left the States. How could I come to love her so much in so short of time? But it’s not only her what about Hosana, Landa and all the others? Lord, protect them. Keep them safe. Hold them and put your hand on them. Protect the innocent children. They are at your mercy.

Ezra Crane Update
Saturday Justin and I finished up two scenes complete with ADR, Foley and background sound. Well, they could still use a sweeten but for the most part they are done. The scenes play so much better it’s amazing. It is so true that sound is half of the movie. I got to play Foley artist which is always fun. I walked on leaves in the sound booth. I put on coats and backpacks and rattled chains. We also went back and sweetened the A.I. voice. It now fills the location better besides simply having a better all around quality. Of course, after that working turned into gazing slack-jawed at anime, action movies and UFC fighting. For more info visit: www.ezracrane.com.
The Adventure Begins…
So, I finally decided to jump into blogging. I’ll be using this to chronicle my reading, movie watching, writing, filmmaking, devotions as well as my upcoming move to Haiti in two years. I hope you will pardon my careless grammar and random thought process. Enjoy.
